Backyard Structures
Backyard structures
are both functional and decorative depending on what the use is. If entertaining is the use then a
gazebo,
arbor
or
pergola
may be the best choice. Growers may prefer a
greenhouse
or
shed.
I actually like all structures and I believe all of them can be incorporated into the yard in a way that that is both appealing and functional.
For example, often sheds are tucked away in some distant corner of the yard. Why not get them closer and use them as a focal point. Combine the use, both storage shed and kids playhouse. Put a bed around it, make walking paths to it and provide seating around it. Sheds are not inexpensive so why waste them?
I like
garden bridges
but all of the ones we found were just to fragile for our intended use. When all else fails build it yourself. Now I have a bridge that can support hundreds of pounds, looks nice and serves a function.

Some may consider
privacy screening
a structure. Privacy screening is very important in the suburbs. Again we had to build our own to provide privacy from my neighbors patio. We built a double lattice wall about 10 foot long and 12 foot high. We added
bushes and clump trees
to create a layering affect which also helps with sound. Even
trellises
might be considered a structure depending on how elaborate they are. Trellises can be very attractive and used to form a privacy wall.
Check with your local authorities before installing any backyard structure since most towns have specific requirements with regards to these structures. Also consider children and
pet
safety when planning any installation of any type of structure. Choose your structure, based on your needs, and try to make it part of your overall backyard life. It should be a functional, attractive and a fun place to be.
