Backyard Vacations

Imagine having all the elements of a resort right at home in your own backyard vacation . Why not eliminate the driving, time loss and aggravation and spend your precious vacation minutes in your own home and yard. Many times we take what we have for granted since it's always there but it can be every bit as enjoyable as a resort 500 miles away.

Think of your favorite resort and attempt to add all the elements from that resort into your own yard. All the beautiful gardens and usually the different water features that create a relaxing environment . Even if the items seem out of reach financially think about how much money can be saved staying at home. Start with a plan and add the elements as you can afford them.

I was hesitant at first, I thought I had to get away to achieve real peace but I was wrong. Initially my project was far from appearing like a resort but in just a few years I have created an extremely relaxing, inviting and vacation feel type yard. I put in my basic plantings, a patio and then some furniture . This was still way short of my intended goal but I could now see the possibilities. I added a bridge , some flower beds and paths. Then I added water features, lighting and garden accessories. I just kept adding and building all of the elements I needed to be in my yard to create that resort feel. People who visit are quick to tell me how relaxed and awed they are by all of the elements within my yard.

I tried to create a situation where I was pleased and that all my visitors would be equally pleased. For example, I prefer gliders, rockers and swings but some of my family don't like things that move so I have some stationary benches.

I try to spark peoples interest with a lot of subtle accessories that may not be noticed individually but are acknowledged in the overall package. As the sun fades and the lights come on, there are flicker bulbs in the electric lanterns that give it that warm resort feel. I have outdoor speakers, that are hidden within the beds, which provide further appeal. There are many other elements that I have added and will continue to add.

Take all the senses into account when planning and creating your backyard vacation. We may not always realize that it is not just the visual and physical we appreciate but it is also the smells, sounds and feel of the resort we love.
