Fire Pits
Fire pits
are a great way to extend outdoor living on cool evenings. They come in a huge variety of sizes, styles and price ranges. There are metal, stone and cast concrete materials offered.
Typically they burn scrape wood that would otherwise be thrown away. They usually have a meshed metal screen to prevent any sparks from escaping the enclosure. Be sure to check with local ordinances since some areas have restrictions on any type of burning.
The most popular fire pits are those that are round exposing all sides to heat. These are great for the center of
conversation areas
where everyone can both see the fire and be heated by it. Just be sure not to place anything to close to the pit since the heat alone can start a fire.
Building your own pit is also becoming quite popular. Many patio
designs
incorporate a pit on a corner or in the center. They are very attractive but I would suggest having a screen cover made to prevent any sparks from escaping. They are usually made with some form of brick or stone walls that are cemented in place. I prefer the more mobile type so that you can adjust the pit depending on where the party gathers. Many of the mobile type pits are designed to be moved around and they are safe enough to place on the lawn. As long as they are high enough off the ground they won't hurt the grass. They are not much use on hot summer evenings though, try purchasing
gel burners
that will allow you to have flame without the excessive heat. Maybe even a Chimnea would work better, most have a narrow opening and vent the heat above the seating area.
Fire pits are a great addition to any outdoor living space even if they are not used all the time. Expanding your variety and options for outdoor life is how to achieve a paradise.
