Fountains

Fountains are a great way to add water to your outdoor living space. They come in a huge variety of styles and are usually molded resin or cast concrete. Technically a fountain is any water feature that projects water upwards into the air. Water features that just circulate water are not really fountains.

Molded resin has come a long way and they are now very realistic in appearance. They require less maintenance and are easier to clean than cast concrete. Typically these water features require a larger pump in order to project the water up into the air which will require more electricity. For anyone looking for something a little cheaper, both in initial cost and operational cost, circulating birdbaths might be a better fit. Fountains give you so much more though, not just in sound but visually. The only water feature that comes close visually is a waterfall. Both catch the sun or night lighting and reflect it with shimmering sparkle.

Cast concrete fountains should be treated at least once a year with a sealer spray to help protect them from the elements. They can be quite difficult to clean since they are concrete but they typically are extremely realistic. They also cost quite a bit more for this reason but they generally last much longer if they are properly cared for.

Fountains are normally a bit larger than standard water features since the basin must be large enough to catch the falling water. They make a great focal point for any garden bed or patio landscape. Since the water is moving at such high volume, cleaning is not required as often as some other water features. They attract plenty of birds since the sound carries a long way.

First decide what style would be best for your outdoor living space and then decide how much you are willing to pay. This should reduce the selection making it easier to decide which one is best. Next determine placement based on creating a focal point and how best to run electrical. Then just turn it on and enjoy all the benefits of an outdoor water fountain.
