Garden Edging

Garden edging can be done with many different products. There is not only many different pre-cast plastic and vinyl edgers available but you can also use a host of natural materials to edge. What you choose will depend on the style, feel and weather conditions where you live.

I have many types of edging in my yard depending on what I am trying to accomplish. When it comes to purchased edgers, I prefer the vinyl type which has rubber mixed in. It is flexible and less likely to heave during winter. I like the way it forms a nice barrier between the grass and bed while virtually disappearing.

I also like to use rock which is a little harder to deal with but forms a nice natural look. Weeding around them can be a pain sometimes but they are cheap and attractive. A cleaner alternative is landscape block which can be purchased at any home improvement store. They come in a variety of colors and eliminate the weeding issue. Even old brick can be used to create a nice and neat looking border.

A lot of people like to use wood whether it be old railroad ties, treated wood or cut down posts. All of these are attractive but will never last as long as the above options since wood will always rot at some point.

Refer back to your theme or style to determine which will look best. Also consider what is being edged with reference to heights, if you need to hold back earth then your choice will be reduced by many. For example, if your edging a raised vegetable bed then you won't be able to use many of the plastic or vinyl edgers and will have to look at stacked wood, boulders or landscape block.

Garden edger is a necessity in creating a nice, clean and lower maintenance border. What seems so small can make all the difference in designing a nice vs. beautiful landscape.
