Garden Planters

Garden planters are a great way to add color to a landscape without having to plant an entire flower bed. Planters come in a huge variety of sizes, colors, styles and materials. They can be placed anywhere from the patio and deck to beds and along walkways. Typically the plants flourish since the soil is usually potting soil which is rich with fertilizers.

Typically they require little care except for the occasional splash of water. They can be used for sun or shade plants. Although they work very well for patio, deck and walkway placement, consider them for placement in garden beds and planting areas. For example, placing a large planter in a vegetable bed will not only improve the appearance of the bed but it will also attract pollinators required for good harvests.

I like to add planters to my flower beds just to add different heights. Obviously you can add different plants to create several heights but with planters you have more choices. The rain and wind will sometimes crush tall flowers but with planters you can have height without the fear of plants being destroyed.

You can also mix and match your planters with garden art and statues. A clump of three items standing in the center of a flower bed becomes an interesting focal point. Sometimes I'll place a planter with plants that attract butterflies near a birdbath to provide more reason for the butterflies to come and stay awhile.

If you have a confined area and need color, there's nothing better than garden planters. They fit anywhere and you can stand them on old crates or bricks to create a planter bed. I have seen anything from annuals and perennials to trees and shrubs planted in them, even vegetables. In recent years they have come out with a choice of resin planters that look like stone or ceramic and they last forever. Just keep in mind that the plants may need to be watered more often since the material does not retain water as well as the old concrete and ceramic planters.

Whatever the choice, planters will always be the most flexible way to add interest to any backyard landscape.
