Garden and Plants

Gardens and plants can be whatever you want it to be. For some people it may be flowers and for others fruit or vegetable beds. I like to mix it all up by planting flowers, fruits, vegetables and shrubs together. I also like to include a water feature, speakers, chimes and potted plants.

All you have to keep in mind is the size, soil and location requirements for each individual plant. Some prefer full sun while others prefer shade. If you're trying to attract birds you may want to consider red flowers that can be of the annual or perennial types. The picture above is my strawberry bed which also has flowers, bushes, onions, a speaker and a water feature included. I want to keep those pollinators happy.

If you're going for a specific look you may want to research the different types of gardens. For example, you may like a cottage style or a more formal pruned type. There are endless options for all interests. I prefer to blend different styles and types to have my own unique style. I like to incorporate a lot of rock in my yard which I use in various ways. You can read more about this in the rock scapes section.

I also like to break the rules. I don't always follow those tags on the plants. The tags are there to indicate the optimum growing conditions, that does not mean you can't try something a little different. I have had great success planting and growing in areas where the tags state I will fail. I also prefer potted to balled and burlapped plants. They may be smaller initially but since the roots have not been sliced, they tend to take and grow much faster. I have many trees and the potted trees have surpassed the burlapped trees in growth in just three years.

Take some time, do the research and go for it. A garden should be like decorating your home. Pick what you like most and make it work.
