Kids Included

Kids included merely refers to considering your children when designing your backyard paradise. If the backyard is going to be a paradise or retreat it must include everyone in the household.

Think about setting a portion of the yard aside for whatever it will take to include your children. If they are younger that may mean a play set or sandbox. If your children are older that may mean a half court or tree fort. How ever old they are the requirement of setting space aside and asking for their input is the same.

You may also need to consider their safety if they are little ones. Stone or rock may not be an option for your landscape and garden accessories may need to be limited till they are a little older. Remember the design is built in stages so holding back on certain elements is perfectly normal.

Since every generation is completely different than the next, always ask what one thing they might like to have in the yard. Don't assume it will be anything like what we wanted. If we want to create a vacation environment for everyone, then they must have a say in the design.

Many children's items can be included in a way that actually enhances the design. For example, a playhouse can be dolled up with its own beds and vegetables so your children can participate in the growing process. Half courts can be surrounded by a decorative hedge providing a barrier and privacy. Even though we may always feel a need to keep a watchful eye on our children, they need their privacy too.

In order for kids to be included we need to consider the following items; safety, interest, space and privacy for everyone. When creating your basic design just set a little space aside, chances are dad will enjoy it too.
