Apr 1, 2009, Spring has arrived, kind of

Well they say spring has arrived but here in the Great Lakes region it seems more like winter. Our temps are well below average and we keep getting snow, as if we didn't get enough throughout the winter months. That won't stop me though; I still intend to do whatever I can given the weather conditions. I have already been prepping beds with peat, compost and fresh mulch. Even with the poor weather, most of my perennials are already coming up.

Now we can look forward to a good growing season though. Our only addition this season will be a metal patio gazebo with a removable top and a blueberry bush. I've decided to try something new this year with regards to my plantings. My beds are now full of perennials and provide very few bare spots so I will not plant any annuals from flats, only seed. I have several packets of seed that I will plant in the numerous beds I have. I will buy a flat or two to complete all the pots I have scattered throughout the yard. I have already purchased many seeds and bulbs at great deals through our affiliates. Of course, I will still plant my vegetables and I still have all my fruits to look forward to. The idea is to conserve given the economy and all. Seed packets can cost a dollar or less and I have had good success with them in the past. As long as they are planted correctly at the right time, they should provide as good, if not better color for the entire season. We also could have built a real wood gazebo but again we are trying to conserve our funds. I found a great patio gazebo that can be anchored to our concrete patio. Through my research I found one that has stood up to the intense winds like the ones we get all year long. Not only will it provide some much needed shade for all but it also has a zippered screen curtain that will allow us to enjoy the yard at night.

As I watch the remainder of snow melt from our last storm, I can imagine the fun, relaxation and joy I will soon get from our backyard room. Watching our guests, their kids and my pets enjoy this outdoor paradise is all I need for motivation. It's been a tough couple of years but I can always escape outside to my very own haven. It's given me the ability to appreciate what really matters in life, not all the material items like cars, stocks and clothes but rather the very definition of life. I've learned to appreciate sunny days, night skies full of stars, the birds singing and the miracle of plants. I know it sounds a little corny but I am honestly grateful I have had the opportunity to find this meaning.

Happy spring everyone and enjoy the miracle of life.
