Outdoor Dining Sets
Outdoor dining sets
are an essential item for outdoor entertaining. What type of dining set really depends on the required function and the location elements. There are so many dining set options available that it's not just your round table and umbrella anymore. Recently manufacturers have created furniture that appears like indoor furniture but is rugged enough for outdoors. The first consideration should be the dining sets location. Will it be directly exposed to the elements? Is it under a covered area or is it out in the open and what elements exist out in the open? If the table and chairs are to be outdoors and fully exposed to the elements, the weight of the set should be significant enough to withstand strong winds. The old aluminum framed dining sets just don't last in the wind. There are sets that are quite heavy now and some that appear just like indoor wood tables. If the set will be in direct sunlight at all times then the material should be able to withstand both decay and fade. If wind is a serious issue then a concrete set maybe the only answer, they may not be as comfortable but they won't go anywhere. Obviously the size of the dining set will depend on the area allotted and the number of regular guests. There are many functions that can be added to the tables like lazy susans, cup holders ect. If you build your own with a durable wood like cedar, you can design anything into the table you want. You may want to have a smaller dining set with plenty of other
seating
available for guests. There are plenty of chairs and
gliders
offered that have built in tables for drinks and food. There are entire patio sets, with all pieces matched, that offer plenty of seating. Creating a intimate and private dining space may require the addition of an
arbor,
pergola
or
a structured privacy screen.
Privacy is always an issue when
living outdoors in the suburbs.
You will also need to decide if cushions are a requirement for your dining set. Cushions are more comfortable and appear to move the indoors out but not all cushions are weather friendly. After years of moving cushions in and out I finally eliminated all cushioned furniture on my patio except for the one I have under the arbor. Although they have made huge strides in fabrics and fillers that shield water, heavy rains will still soak into the padding.
A good dining set should be heavy, durable, comfortable and able to withstand sustained 40 mile per hour winds.
