Vegetables

Vegetables are a necessary requirement in our daily diet and there's nothing better than growing our own food. Today, more than ever, growing our own food is a great alternative to purchasing food that may be recalled for causing all kinds of illnesses. Anything that we can do to ensure the health of our families is worth it. Growing your own food can be very easy and fun at the same time.

It would be best if we could set aside a large portion of our yards for a large food garden but in suburbia this is not always possible or even allowed in some municipalities. We can at the very least set aside a small area to grow essentials such as tomatoes, peppers, onions, various herbs, lettuce and fruits just to name a few.

In order to grow the best crops the ground should be properly prepared, preferable with compost which provides nutrients and moisture retention. Turn the soil and mix with the compost before planting. Make sure the location will meet the sun requirements for the crop you choose.

If your space is limited try planting in combination with other plantings like flowers and small shrubs. Since my space is limited I have been forced to mix my beds combining annuals, perennials, fruits and vegetables. It works very well since I do not require large crops of any one food. Even with my limited plants I typically get so much production I am forced to give some away to friends and neighbors.

If you are extremely limited on space, try an upside down planter hanging from a shepherds hook or planting in a container. I utilize both, planting tomatoes in upside down containers and herbs in planters. It works very well and sometimes actually creates more production.

What ever the situation, we can grow our own food which is far healthier than anything we can purchase. It's fun and it can be educational for the kids. Nothing can compare to the taste of home grown food.
