Waterfalls
are an interesting addition to outdoor living spaces since they can provide enjoyment to different senses. They can provide interesting sound which can also help muffle neighborhood noise and they are visually appealing.
You can create your own from scratch using liner and rocks of many different varieties or you can purchase a pre-cast waterfall of just about any size. Pre-cast waterfalls usually come in stone or resin materials. Which falls you choose will depend on the size and how much maintenance you are looking for.
I have both a small resin falls and a larger cement cast falls. Each provides great sound and visual appeal. In my former home we had a waterfall that we created from scratch but this time I wanted less maintenance. With either of the pre-cast falls we can easily prep them for winter and we only clean them once a summer.
Falls are especially attractive when the are created from scratch and spill into a
pond
of any size. Not only is it attractive to have this combination but the falls actually help filter the water in the pond. Anytime you can create a natural eco system it is good for plants and any fish that may be in the pond.
Often people will combine a waterfall, pond and
fountain
into to one large water feature. This also helps further filter the water, the more motion in the water, the better filtered and aeriated the water will be.
I like to place my falls so that the sun catches each fall and shimmers off the water. At night I have my
lights
placed so that I can still see the falls from my back door, the light reflecting off each fall.
Whatever water feature you choose it's bound to be a great addition to your yard and most likely the focal point. Any feature you can add to your yard is just another step on the way to creating a backyard
vacation.
